Hello there! My name is Samantha Wohl. I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor in Ponca City since September of 2006. I am very passionate about helping others, and I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of my clients’ therapeutic journey.
My approach to counseling is largely holistic. I look at my clients’ symptomology and presenting issues through a 5-fold lens—seeing each person from a psychological, emotional, behavioral, physiological and spiritual viewpoint. I believe that who you are today is an accumulation of everything you have experienced in life to this point. The good times in life as well as the bad have shaped what you think of yourself, the world, and other people. When you’ve lived through a “negative life” situation you have a tendency to develop emotional and behavioral reactions systems based on those experiences. This directly shapes your view of “the Self” and influences how you relate to others.
Through the therapeutic process, I will help you get to the root of those negative life experiences and help you make sense of how those experiences have shaped your belief system, behavioral habits, emotional states, physical health, relationships with others, and most importantly your relationship with God (if you believe). I can help you accept what has happened to you and find peace within yourself as well as your relationship with others.
I am a Christian!! and my foundation of faith as a Christian plays a huge role in how I view human behavior, the struggles of good vs. evil, human Suffering and trials, the purpose of life, and the therapeutic healing process in general.
I do not require my Clients to have the same beliefs as I do… nor do I impose my beliefs on my Clients. However, there will be times when I think talking about the Subject of God (a Higher Power) will benefit you and help lift a roadblock that is in the way of your healing. If you believe this will become a problem please consider discussing your concerns with me personally. Counseling is a voluntary service and you get to choose which therapist is the best fit for you. Remember, therapy is a commitment of time, money, and effort!! I want you to get the best results possible! It may not be easy, but it is always worth it!!
My main area of focus is in the treatment and recovery from trauma and/or complex trauma. A trauma is simply defined as a “negative life” experience. Complex trauma is a series of either ongoing trauma or multiple overlapping trauma types. Common traumatic experiences include, but are not limited to: chronic and ongoing childhood physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, abandonment, rape, divorce, substance abuse issues, domestic violence, natural disasters, car accidents, witnessing a violent event, being the victim of a crime, committing an offensive act, loss of a loved one, violent/sudden death of a loved one, and/or having a serious medical issue.
I have had extensive specialized training in trauma treatment including EMDR as well as TF-CBT. For more information about those treatment techniques please access those website(s) to the right of this page.
